Phalanx, Peltast, and Pilum is designed to enable players a chance develop a deeper understanding of classical warfare at the tactical level. Of course, at the tactical level, with each figure representing about sixteen soldiers and each inch of the game table representing about fifteen yards, it becomes nearly impossible for players to recreate grand classical battlefields involving tens of thousands of combatants; nevertheless, in playing only a portion of a larger battle, players can understand an entire battlefield with greater insight. Certainly, classical historians focused predominately upon the strategic level, yet a tactical level game can better teach us how a classical battlefield would have operated and enable us to see the link between the actions of individual soldiers and the outcome of the battle. Its through first-hand control of individual units that players can come to appreciate how unit formation, deployment, movement, and their attacks direct the course of a battle. The rule system is still being test-played but we are getting close to a finished product. I continue to make subtle changes to the rules each winter season, but overall, the rules play quite smoothly. If you are interested in joining us to test play or contributing to the rules in any way, please let me know.
