In April (2008), my good friend Brian took his own life after a twenty-year battle with bipolar disorder and chemical dependency. I've been friends with Brian since the first grade, and it is hard to explain the sorrow felt in losing a close friendship that spanned from childhood to middle-adulthood. At this point, 19 December 2008, it has been almost exactly one year since I took one last walk with Brian before he reentered treatment (for the umteenth time). It was a wonderful walk around Lake of the Isles and Lake Calhoun. We told stories and shared ideas, but it would be the last of many of these conversations. When he emerged in April, I spoke with Brian on the phone about a week before his death. I earnestly looked forward to seeing him again, but I was realistic -- reorienting himself back into "real-life" was always difficult after being in treatment, and this time, he did not make it.
Brian really despised computers and always called himself an "old fashioned" kind of guy, so I figured it would be appropriate to spite him and place a page on the ABDOMEN site to post some of Brian's works and things he helped create or inspired. Clearly, Brian considered himself a poet, so I hope you take some time to read his poems here..
